In a high-stakes bilateral meeting held at the White House on April 24, 2025, President Donald J. Trump and the Prime Minister of Norway addressed the press following deep discussions on the Ukraine conflict, trade relations, and Arctic security.
President Trump criticized what he called “Biden’s $350 billion mistake” in reference to U.S. spending on Ukraine, calling for an immediate ceasefire. He reiterated that the war would “never have happened” under his leadership and emphasized his commitment to saving lives.
“We want to end that war. And I think we’ve made a lot of progress,” said Trump, noting active diplomatic efforts underway between his team, Ukraine, and Russia.
The Norwegian Prime Minister echoed Trump’s sentiments, commending U.S. engagement and confirming that Norway has tripled its military support to Ukraine this year, contributing $8 billion to strengthen its position at the negotiating table.
The press conference also touched on reciprocal tariffs—Norway currently faces a proposed 15% tariff rate under Trump’s economic policy. When asked if that might change, Trump replied, “They have a $2 trillion fund and no debt. They can afford it.”
Other highlights included Trump reaffirming U.S. interests in Greenland “for international peace,” supporting future Abraham Accords expansion, and teasing progress on Iran talks. The Prime Minister extended a formal invitation for Trump to visit Norway, which the president enthusiastically accepted.
The meeting marks a reaffirmation of transatlantic cooperation amid growing global tensions, with both leaders signaling strong intent to end the Ukraine war diplomatically—sooner rather than later.
