In a sharp and direct statement during the April 9th House Education and Workforce Committee hearing, Congresswoman Mary Miller (R-IL) voiced strong support for H.R. 2616, the Protect Kids Act. The legislation would require public schools to notify parents before affirming a student’s change in gender identity, including pronoun or name changes.
“Parents deserve to know,” Miller declared, accusing schools of keeping families in the dark about what she described as major decisions in a child’s life. “We must pass the Protect Kids Act to safeguard the minds of innocent youth and guarantee parents are completely aware of what their school is doing.”
Supporters of the bill, mostly Republicans, argue that parental rights have been undermined by policies that encourage schools to withhold gender-related information. Opponents, including Democratic lawmakers, warn that such laws could force vulnerable students to be outed to unsupportive or even abusive households.
The debate reflects a growing national divide over how gender identity is handled in schools — and who ultimately has the right to decide what children learn, say, or share about themselves.
